History

Embark on a journey through time with the captivating tale of Hoyo de Monterrey, a brand whose legacy dates back to 1831 when Spanish noblemen Don Jose Gener y Batet journeyed to Cuba from Spain as a young teenager. With several years of hard work and toils on his uncle's plantation, Batet would eventually establish his own factory in Havana in 1865, formally introducing his own line of cigars. Though initially named La Escepcion, Batet later rebranded as Hoyo de Monterrey. The name itself pays homage to the unique concave landscape that characterizes the preferred land of local tobacco growers for cultivating exceptional crops.

With Batet’s connections, the brand swiftly gained popularity across Europe and established himself as one of Cuba's most esteemed cigar makers. In 1900, Batet's daughter assumed control of the company, leading it for three decades before eventually selling the family's lands and reinvesting the proceeds into the then-lucrative sugarcane trade. Subsequently, Hoyo de Monterrey became part of a firm managing other renowned cigar brands like Punch and Belinda.

Following the Cuban revolution Hoyo de Monterrey was nationalized. Spanning a range of strength and flavor profiles, Hoyo de Monterrey offers a captivating selection of cigars, with classics such as the Epicure No.2 and Double Corona.  To this day, these fine cigars are still crafted in the traditional style by Cuba's finest rollers.

From its humble beginnings in 1865 to the present day, there is no need to delay—seize the opportunity to acquire your very own Hoyo de Monterrey cigars now and savor their timeless excellence.
