History

Immerse yourself in the captivating history of H. Upmann cigars, one that is steeped in mystery, espionage, and remarkable achievements. Beginning in 1840, brothers and bankers August and Hermann Upmann, set to establish a branch of their German-based family bank in Havana. While the bank flourished, so did Hermann's fascination with Cuban cigars. Hermann started sending these exquisite cigars back to his family in Europe, laying the foundation for their eventual success. The early acclaim of H. Upmann cigars can be traced back to the seven gold medals they won, which are still proudly displayed on their cigar boxes to this day.

However, success couldn’t last forever. With World War I erupting, Hermann's nephews, Alpert and Hermann, were overseeing both the bank and the cigar company. Tragically, they abused their positions and utilized their dealings with the U.S. to operate a covert German intelligence network. The Upmanns and their agents were implicated in inciting multiple uprisings in the Caribbean as well as supplying weapons for a Cuban coup d'état.

After the seizure of the cigar company and bank by the U.S. government, as well as subsequent changes in ownership, the Upmann brothers never fully recovered financially or legally from the consequences of their actions. Today, H. Upmann cigars continue to be produced in Havana, where they originated, in the historic H. Upmann factory.

Still crafted with premium tobaccos from the esteemed Vuelta Abajo region, H. Upmann remains a beloved Cuban cigar brand with a diverse portfolio of over 30 vitolas. Embrace the allure of H. Upmann and indulge in a legacy of excellence that continues to captivate cigar enthusiasts across the globe.
